Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey, originally known as the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter at Westminster, is one of London’s most iconic landmarks. Located on Parliament Square beside the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, this magnificent Gothic abbey church has been the site of coronations and royal events for centuries. It is the final resting place of 17 monarchs and 8 former Prime Ministers. Offering daily services and over a thousand years of history, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a must-visit.
Coronation Chair
Commissioned by King Edward I in 1296, the Coronation Chair has been used for every monarch’s crowning since 1308, including Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. It remains the oldest piece of furniture in the UK still serving its original purpose.
Poets’ Corner
The Abbey’s Poets’ Corner honors literary greats, with burials and memorials for figures such as Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, and memorials to Shakespeare and Robert Burns, among others.
Royal Connections
A site of royal significance since 1066, Westminster Abbey has hosted coronations for centuries and is the burial place of 17 monarchs. In modern history, it was the venue for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011.
